question on dumping without coin counters

I just started CRH and have 3 boxes of dimes and 2 boxes of halves I need to dump. I haven't found a coin counter around yet except a small one the bank told me is for "kids to bring their piggy banks to," so don't think I can use it. I'll need to dump at the tellers.

1) Do you dump coins at banks you don't have an account with? Will they usually exchange it for paper money?

2) How much can you reasonably drop off if you don't have an account? I was thinking maybe a box of dimes or $100-200 of halves at a time.

3) Regardless of whether you have an account, can you drop a box of dimes in the original box and plastic wrappers or will it be too conspicuous?

4) If you do have an account, can you drop off - say - $200 in halves at 5 different branches of the same bank? Or might they look at previous transactions and say "no more"?

I don't mind opening accounts. I'm just trying to get a feeler for what's "reasonable" and what has worked for others. BTW I rerolled all my halves in the original rolls so everything I want to dump is "neat."

1. all my dump banks require a deposit slip

2. I never did it with a bank i dont have an account with.

3. LOL, dont do that, see my post today, I got a nutcase manager encounter today.

4. I think thats ideal.

actually I think dimes are OK, its the halves I got a situation with.

I get paper money back with no slips to fill out. I also ship some coin out each week too. I try not to leave a paper trail though.

What you want to look for are how many "coin holders" the bank has. My banks have green ones for dimes that hold $200.00 dimes for example. You also want to watch the reaction of the teller closely when you put your bag of coins on the counter.

When I first started and didnt know the capabilities of each bank in Phoenix...some freaked out over $100, while others didnt bat an eye for $1000. Some banks were freaking out because they only had 2 green coin holders and still had more of my dimes to count, while others had 6-10 of them laying around, no problem.

Best way to get your "feelers" out is to put your feelers out. Personally, I have come to love dumping....because I enjoy the reaction of the teller. Shows the true character of the person your dealing with. When I find attitude, I try with all my heart, to try to get them for next time.
