Here are five Marine buttons.
No.1 D.Evans & Co. Attleboro Falls-1850-1865.
No.2 Scovill MF'G co. Waterbury 1850-1865 note the big in MF'G
No.3 Horstmann Philadelphia 1893-1935
No.4 & 5 The Art Metal Works Newark. N.J. I couldn't find out the dates on these. If anyone knows let me know.

My question is are these civil war buttons ? Rare Union Marine buttons like the one posted here .Go to Union Buttons #2.

The Art Metal Works Co. started in 1886 in New York and then set up shop in Newark in 1897, so definitely post CW. The company was founded by Louis V. Aronson and the company later changed it's name to Ronson Art Metal Works and became well known for its Ronson cigarette lighters which they still produce today. They are now part of the Zippo Manufacturing Co.

I have the Art Metal Works and D.Evans & Co. Attleboro Falls backmarks on my list of post 1902 buttons. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,212590.100.html

Companies used their old dies and sometimes old stock and the 1865 Scovill MF'G Co. Waterbury backmark was used in WWI as well. There are some button experts here (not me)that can date backmarks from grooves and ring of dots and other differences.
