My son has been away from home for a few months in college. Since it has been a while we wanted to get out and do some hunting.... Let him shake the rust off of his Etrac. :)

The site we picked out has some French and Indian war history... While it has been hit hard in the past we know there has to be a few more goodies hanging around.

Well, we found it what we were looking for. :hello2: About an hour and a half into the hunt, I had a decent sounding signal under the coil... But I waited for my son to hear it before digging it. I was thinking it would be another .69 cal musket ball. He dug the plug... Much to our surprise we found this cob!

It's a first for me, and not something I was expecting to find in central PA. But the best part was being able to share this moment with my son. More than likely it will be spring before we can share a hunt again, so this was a treat.

Anyone have an idea as to a mintage date?

oh - couple of notes about the pictures- ignore the IH, it's only there for a size reference. And the second coin was found at the same site, ID unknown

Nice surprise indeed.

Amazing. That's way up on my wish list. I would be going back to that site

Hey Mach 1 Congrats on the cob and indeed finding it with your son makes it more priceless then ever .

I would have been happy with the Indian. The cob would require an underwear change. CONGRATS :icon_thumright:

Wow! Nice find!

Fantastic finds.. Thanks for sharing.

Congrats, def a great hunting day!:occasion14:

Man. Awesome day. Wish I could find a cob.

Very cool - I think 1600s

Thanks for the kind words, guys! Every time I think about my son being there with me when it was dug I get a bigger smile.... :)

Over in the cob forum I'm told its Mexican..... Which makes one wonder how it got to the middle of a field in central PA... With the wear it has no doubt it wasn't a direct trip!

i never thought I'd ever find a cob... At least this close to home!

Nice finds Keith! I think your other silver is a pillars type 1/2 reale

The small unknown coin looks like a Spanish 2 reale?

Oh... its a bit smaller than a two reale... its sized more like a 3 cent piece. Thanks for the kind words, guys.

Like to see these cobs! They will never turn up here....

Special find, special day, special memories! Out of curiosity what machine were you using, what was the depth of the cob and what were your numbers? I as well miss seeing my son!!...................6bkpkr

Keith, I am not surprised that you dug a cob at that site. When you took me there a couple weeks ago I said "a place like this could have a cob or a cut piece of silver lurking". Reason being that Virginia provincials passed through there during the French & Indian War, and we know how many cobs and cut pieces turn up on colonial Virginia sites. My only cob was found in one of Washington's French & Indian camps about 60 miles west of where yours was found.

Super find !!!!

It certianly was a great day, one I will not soon forget. :) And, it looks like this may be the last hunt I have with him until spring... unless we get a thaw around Christmas!

On that day I was using my Etrac, it was a strong signal with 20-39 at 6" deep. It surprised me at the time because of the higher ferrous number, and I wasn't expecting it to be a coin. The expectation was it was one of those big .69 cal musket balls that sound just like that...
