Found this today - I'm assuming it is some kind of sledge for the railroad, but, why flat on one side, the extra protrusion on the side and the nipple type thing at the end???

Any ideas?

Would a lock pin have a flat side, something that looks like a broken off handle, and a pointed end? What is the nipple at the end do?

Thanks,

B

Hi mrs.o, I presume this is made of iron, it almost looks like stone 8)
also, what is the metal of the sticking-out bit at the end ? Please ;D

Mike

Edit: I changed my question, I don't know why I thought that bit was threaded.

I may be way off on this but it looks like a window weight to me.

I agree

Looks like a pin that is locked, the locking device slides up against the flat, and the protrusion on the end is a grease fitting. That’s my bet .

broken bit from a jack hammer hydraulic hammer.

a lot of good guesses. Try cleaning up the end to see if its a grease fitting.

Yep, made of metal - found with a metal detector yesterday.

I will clean it up and see - hadn't thought about the nipple being a fitting.

Could be an old "hitch pin". Hitch pins were used to connect railcars before the modern couplings came along??? Tony

Why would grease go into a chunk of iron with no portals?
I dont know. It would have to be hollow inside. Maybe when its cleaned up we will see. Maybe there is an opening on the flat side. Im thinking like Ant and Tony on the hitch pin idea but I am just guessing. Here are two old RR hitch pins. railroad hitch pin2.webprailroad hitch pin.webp
