Iv done alot of trapping in my day and never seen a trap that would resemble that, seems to have square nails rusted in place like a horse shoe....

I tend to agree with you Toecutter. I use to trap in my youth and never saw a trap like this, BUT STILL, that was a good guess.
The finger, ( or thumb ), latch on the side does favor a purse of some type. Maybe it was a civil war equivalent of today's "Man purse" or fanny pack ? It is interesting and I will continue looking for possibilities. That thumb lever/latch is SO familiar, yet I can't remember from where
