A boat hook with a horseshoe crab attached?
 
The boat hook is correct. It isn't a horseshoe crab. It is pissed off though.
 
We pulled it out of the water but it didn't belong there.
 
That big pink oval is it's mouth. As I said, it was not happy.

We were crabbing in the upper Chesapeake and saw what we assumed was a crab swimming on the surface. When we got close we saw a bat treading water with its wings. I wouldn't bring it on the boat but I felt sorry for it. image.webp

We built it a raft and brought it close to shore with a favoring wind.
 
Aawww... That's nice.
 
After I got home I did some Google research and discovered that bats have difficulty taking off from the ground, which is why they sleep upside down from a bit of a height. I doubt this tired out bat made it.

You certainly saved its life, but being injured, in the water, It may be sick with RABIES or (the dreaded) White-Nose Syndrome, that is killing MILLIONS of these little guys, back East.
