Rare Texas bone artifact ( Bead or Whistle ? )

Got a pretty little bone piece the other day. I figured I'd share it with y'all and see if someone might know for sure if this is a bead or a whistle or what ? I think it was found in a cave in our area long ago. Bone finds in our area are so rare I have seen only one other whole bone artifact come out of the ground here in the four years I've been diggin. I have it in a frame by itself. We do seen many bone fragments in the midden and drain dirt, much of it is marrow scatched cracked bone. We just don't find whole tools, and even fewer other whole worked bone artifacts down here. Happy Hunting !

Thanks Rebel and Roy. Funny you should mention the leanderthawl find. That happened about 8 miles from my home. We also had a major discovery made in our back yard here recently at the Gault site in Salado. One of my customers at my store , a guy who has dug at my camp says. "They dug down 3 feet below the Clovis level that has already yielded thousands of artifacts and guess what ? 15,000 year old plus occupation discovered. The oldest in North and South America." The discovery was made about one days walk from my camp towards the Colorado river . We are in the old country. Looks like we need to dig deeper. They are giving public tours out there in Salado if anyone is interested I can get the contact info.

Have you tried to blow it to see if it actually whistles? That would be the best way to decide if it is a Whistle. It sure looks like one.

Of Course I tried to blow it SRV, soon as all the dirt was out of it. It does not whistle. It may have many moons ago but today it just makes a shhhh sound. The way the ends are angled and worked leads me to think necklace bead. Also a worked dear antler tip was recovered from the same area. It was probably what hung from the hole in the bead? I'm gonna post the antler tip when I get a chance. Happy hunting !

Krisrock, Hey that's pretty neat. Cool find !! Most of the bone fragments I find out your way are so eaten by the soil, there's not much left. Even buffalo rib parts turn pretty much to dust hours after they come out of the dirt. Must be the limestone breakdown in the soil composition. Judging by the wear and use marks I would vote for it being an adornment related item. I've found similiar bone with scrimshaw and wear patterns around here. Its always a neat find . Thanks for showing.
