RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING - UPDATE

Just got in from my second 4.5 hr session today (9hrs on my own). The :icon_sunny: was in the 90s & there was plenty to dig, as I changed tack & tried the Field next door where Shaun7 got the Gold Celtic Coin (last year). I thought I stood a chance with the recent heavy rain, & I was right the signals were pinging out everywhere. I will post the rest later, I just thought this needed its own post, as it might get lost in all the other stuff :laughing7:

Farthing of Edward III 1333-42
Mint: Berwick-on-Tweed
Type: Type 7b

Diameter: 12.5mm
Weight: 0.26g (Should be 0.25g/5 grains) :o

Obverse: +EDWAR[DVS] D·GR'
Tall bifoliate straight-sided crown, with no spearheads. "Zorro mask" eyes. Drapery has folds.

Reverse: VIL [LAB E]RV ICI
"Long Cross" with three pellets in the LAB and ICI quarters and a bear's head in the other two quarters.

Scarcity: Rare

Not only rare but it must be up there with the specimens, look at this site for general condition:
http://hammered_farthings.tripod.com/edward-iii-farthings/berwick.htm

It books (2010) at £150 in VF, but I know there are some keen farthing collectors out there  Not that it will every go on sale

Well done mate :icon_thumleft:

Re: RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING

that has to be one of the smallest coins i've ever seen. How deep was it?

Awesome find. congrats

Re: RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING

Congrats on finding another rare coin, wow, sure is small and light, could have easily been missed, especially if it had been "on edge". Again, congrats on another historical find.
After looking at the link showing others, your coin is in terrific shape! :hello2:

9 hours, that's a dedicated dig for sure.

Congrats on a rare find. Yeah it sure is small, I just got a US 3 center two days ago, which I thought was pretty small, but at .68 grams it's nearly 3 times the weight of your farthing. It must be extreamly thin as well.

Cool find.

Re: RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING

Weldone, well worth the 9 hour hunt.
Dave.

:hello:

Farthings are Notorious for coming out in bad shape, to get one like that, and rare is a double bonus...I vote Banner on this one :icon_thumleft:

Hard to judge in stubble, but it wasn't on the top & its wasn't more than my first dig at 3 inches. :icon_thumright:

Re: RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING

Well-deserved find for your continued dedication

Re: RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING

sweet piece of silver there.

Re: RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING

Congratulations on your Edward III Farthing Cru! :notworthy:

My BANNER vote is in mate!

Cheers,
Dave

Re: RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING

Another nice one Crusader. I have a hard time judging the coins you show because they don't usually have a common coin to compare them with. The Yank penny helps and brings it back to context. That thing is beyond tiny, and fortunate for you it didn't get lost. Looking at info, this is a supreme find. It should make banner. I will vote yes . More good hunts, but leave a few more for Shaun.

Re: RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING

Thanks for the votes & kind words above. I'm not concerned about the banner on this one, I posted seperately because I still had a lot to clean & sort/record & I wanted to share the good news after I had IDed it. Its what makes this hobby exciting, I knew it was in great nick, & that the reverse type was one I hadn't seen before, but didn't think it would turn out quite as good as it did :headbang:

I've had a streak of hammered this past couple of weeks & can remember when 20 was a good year :o I hope this continues, but thats not detecting ::)

Re: RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING

Nice hammered Cru! HH, Mike

Re: RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING

Interesting hammered .
I thought they could not publish the same findings by repeated, but that does not diminish the importance of coin....this coin is very special! :notworthy:

Re: RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING

Here is an interesting read about why this is so rare:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farthing_(British_coin)

I like the quote below:

"Furthermore, the coins are so small that few metal detectors can find them. Consequently they are rare today." :laughing9:

Re: RARE 'ZORRO MASK' EDWARD III FARTHING

Beautiful find :o
I see a lot of the earlier coins (esp. gold) are wafer thin.
Love that bust
