Re-use of an old latern

On first glance this appears to be the remains of an old lantern but a metal plate has been wired in place. Any ideas of what it may have been used for

old railroad lantern? i don't think a handle was added, i think there was another handle on the other side that rusted away. or there where 2 wires that made up a basket that held the globe in place.
