recent ohio creek/field finds

Its great to be out hunting again on a regular basis.I have gotten out 4 times in the last 2 to 3 weeks.i have gone creek hunting a couple of times and have gone on a couple field hunts.The first group of pics is from an evening creek hunt.Let me know what you think of that peice.The next set of pics is from a different creek hunt.Cool story with that find,my dog Clovis and I were walking a gravel bar and I look over about 15 feet to my left, she is standing over the point,her first find.The rest of the pics are from a couple field hunts.Good luck hunting everyone and have a good holiday weekend.

Hey man where ya been? Clovis looks comfortable!! Nice finds. I can not beleive you are walking that corn but you have done well. That pendent...... what in the world is it? I mean why the holes so close. I have been looking for something similiar drilled and not seeing a hole pattern like that. Did they polish the one end?

I have been staying real busy with work,doing things around the house,everything but hunting.the last few weeks have been nice to get out.I was raised hunting in the corn so it doesnt bother me,but let me tell you the cobwebs have been crazy this year in the cornfields,eating spiders isnt alot of fun.lol..as for the pendant,some may call it a gorget,my opinion on the peice is that it started out as a 4 hole gorget then got broke and had a 5th hole drillled in it to salvage the peice.the broken edge is very smooth but not flat, maybe reworked/polished or it has been laying in that creek for a long time??I have never seen a gorget with 4 holes so the 5th hole is a puzzler.i do dig how the 4 holes are coutersinked,but cant explain the hole pattern.so how you been doing richard?

Great loking finds creek astronaut. You've done really well.

Those holes are a little funky on that stone piece. I've never seen counter sunk holes like that on a piece that was Indian drilled. Very curious looking.

I have been swamped with work also. Have not been out as much this summer. I have been mostly metal detecting some Civil war sites I found and spending weekends at the hunting club.
I should get a hunt or two in before to long. Working on new to me spots and trying to get away from the traffic. Good to see ya back!!

Hey Creek, do you think you can post a str8 on pic of the edge with the drill holes. I am wondering if it is ground down into form. My take on this and it is a long shot but, I am thinking I could be right, is that it is some sort of marriage pendant where the other half was identical and given to someone significant. It almost looks like some sort of Bird Effigy pendant. After looking at it further I think it is a significant find!!! ...............I hope you have time to submit that shot of the edge, I think that is the key to this pendent.............................

No offense intended, but maybe you've found an old broken roof tile/shingle. The counter sunk holes and spacing are right for a shingle. The holes are counter sunk so that the nail can go in flush (without breaking the slate) and another slate can lay flat over it.

However that doesn't explain why the break looks like it's been smoothed, or the other hole...

its not a roofing shingle ,too thick for that but i dont think its native american either, looks more like soapstone , might be some kind of carriage warming stone or bed warming stone, possibly an old clothes iron also

I agree, slate was used for a ton of diiferent things back in the day and is still used today,,, Nice finds...

I doubt it's soapstone. You can see where the stone was saturated and some areas starting drying out. Soapstone is so waxy, it doesn't really soak up any water but rather water simply beads up or just runs off.

Those are not ancient Indian drilled holes. Probably a roof tile like was said earlier.

I'm wracking my brain trying to remember where I've seen a piece like that with counter-sunk holes....but I believe that nuts fit in the back in the larger holes so whatever it was attached to, it sat flush on it. Could be wrong.....
