The eight-pointed star (octagram) is not an uncommon reverse emblem on rechenpfennigs from the Lauer family of Nuremberg (1790-1924). The designs often carry Greek or Roman symbolism and, for the Greeks, the octagram symbolises the eight cardinal directions, sometimes representing guidance and balance. For the Romans, it symbolises Venus, the Roman equivalent of the Babylonian goddess Ishtar representing love, fertility, and war.

Here it is on a Lauer recehnpfenning similar to the one described in the newspaper article, and produced by Johann Jakob Lauer (written as IOH LAUER on the one described in the article, but they missed the ‘A’) between 1806-1865.

The helmeted figure on the obverse is usually Alexander the Great, sometimes with the legend ‘ALEX MAGNUS’, but on the example I’m showing it’s the Roman god Mercury with a winged helmet and the legend ‘MER/KURIUS’.
