Red Jasper with Black Stripes

Found this on a Washington beach. A thin tip and a gravel beach don't go together very well; an intact point is next to impossible to find here. Great shape for a beach find though.

I believe that this spot would have been primarily used during the summer months. The percentage of artifacts that are out-of-place materials (mainly from Oregon) probably means that it was at least a trading area and also a potlatch beach "(among North American Indian peoples of the northwest coast) an opulent ceremonial feast at which possessions are given away or destroyed to display wealth or enhance prestige." There are also stories of tribal wars with other tribes from British Columbia that would come here to take women and children for slaves.
