3" tall with threaded stud, brass with silver washed swinging cross hanging in middle, found at early 1800s farm,

Greetings .. That is a rein terret (aka rein guide)That style is frequently called flappers, spinners, etc,

Not a rein guide but it did go on top of horses as decoration. Can't remember there proper name, might be called a 'swinger'.

interesting, I was wondering because I have never found one like it, sure does look similar to a reins guide though. Looking into them there were referred to as "fly head terrets" and have tons of nick names, swingers being one of them.
