Re: Repost of Unusual Ring...New Pic's

THIS IS AN OUTSIDE OPINION OF THE RING: I can tell you that rings at least somewhat similar in style have been around for centuries and can be found in many different materials. The most likely if the color is true would be silver or it could possibly be pewter or lead though those would most likely take on a white coating. White gold is also a possibility though that is a for the most part more modern material so if that is the case the ring would be somewhat newer. One more possibility is that it is a form of iron which is not affected by magnets very pure iron sometimes won't react to a magnet at least not enough to notice. I am assuming that when you said the owner indicated it was not magnetic that meant that it did not move when a magnet was brought near it and not just that it had no magnetic field. I sometimes purchase rings from a company in New Mexico which are somewhat similar in style though I have not ordered one with that type of design. If you want to ask me anything else feel free to do so. By the way it would help to know when and where the ring was found in trying to determine its history.

Gorgon ???,2 suns,2 goddess's ???,8 planets or are they stars ??? ???Metal could be silver...gilded iron ???( pure iron would not noticably be magnetized ???)mixed metals ???(outside opinion)the symbols and they are ones that have been used in virtually every culture on earth in some variation or other. While it could be Roman ,but it might be possible that some of the items were hidden to protect them during or around the time of the civil war.

Re: Repost of Unusual Ring...New Pic's

I made a test solution by mixing nitric acid, a pinch of potassium dichromate, and a little distilled water.
To Test
File a notch in test piece, apply a drop of solution- watch for color reaction.
Brass--Dark Brown
Copper--Brown
Gold--None
Nickel--Blue
Lead--Yellow
Tin--Yellow
Silver(pure)--Bright Red
Silver .925--Dark Red
Silver .800--Brown
Silver .500--Green
Palladium--None

I used this Nitric Acid/Potassium Dichromate/Water solution to test a large piece of metal i found on Treasure Beach. It showed yellow, and turned out to be lead sheathing from an old ship. It worked good on silver too ( Dark Red). http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,24080.0.html

That is a very common style, it has been used for a very long time..you will find many similar ones in the internet....try to clean it to see if you can find any marks inside....

Best,

Chagy.......

I sent him a PM with my SEM offer Michelle - no response. Perhaps he is away on vacation or something - not sure.

Michelle,

I hate to say it but sometimes if you can't get the details to support an ID without an exact match it is just an educated Guess. I spent a lot of time trying to find a significance for the association of the details and came up empty,
sorry,
Doc
I do agree...I so wanted to figure this one out ...but....anyway we tried!

Re: Repost of Unusual Ring...New Pic's

Still no one accepts the fact it might not be a ring at all, in the finger sense? It appears too big and bulky and base material composition. I don't remember the concensus of the last thread. I seem to remember everyone went for the decoration aspect? ??? (Trying to keep it alive for you. Mich.) Umbrella band? You found a lot of parts to umbrellas around CW sites..decoration on an old pool Que? band around hilt to handle of knife? And why do I think Zinc or nickle composition.
