Laos cave rescue diver speaks to CNN after first survivor is out

One survivor was safely guided out of a remote cave in Laos after villagers became trapped there over a week ago. Specialist cave divers on a multinational team are racing to free them.

The men are being referred to in local reports as ‘villagers’, rather than ‘miners’ but they were apparently searching for gold ore at the time, and foreign press picked this up as ‘miners’. They went into what is described both as a cave and a cavern which has unstable clay and mud walls. They became trapped in a chamber about 300 metres (980ft) from the cave entrance that can be reached through a narrow tunnel which has protruding jagged rocks. Heavy rain created flash-flooding which caused sand and gravel to seal off their only way out.

Provision of scuba gear to those that remain trapped is apparently being discussed “as a last resort” but, in the meantime, they’re being protected from drowning by pumping out the floodwater.
