Hey, everyone… I’m looking for a jewelry that offers a fair price for gold and stones in the Tampa area. I’m not looking for melt value — I’m looking for a good price for some nice jewelry… Appreciate any leads… Thanks!!

Hello, floridaunderground.

Retail jewelry has a very high mark-up. As a result, selling jewelry to a retail store will not bring near the original price, if a retailer is even interested ...

Mixed gold & copper (22, 18, 14, 10Kt, etc...) will not bring it's gold melt value, as refining costs time & money, & the buyer will want to make a profit above that.

As far as stones, such as diamonds, rubies, etc. ...the mark-up on those are way more than mark-up on metals. These stones are plentiful, & have little to no value to a jewelry store ...

...You may find a jeweler who will take the items on consignment, but, expect to pay anywhere from 25% - 45% commission.

...I would look for someone local, a small operator, who makes custom jewelry, & sell the items to them ...

Or, to sell the pieces, you may consider, venues such as Etsy, eBay, Craigslist, etc. In my experience, these venues will bring the best returns on your jewelry.

Oh, and pawn shops?....fagiddaboudit ...

You're not the first person to have this problem and won't be the last.
Read this article on what gold jewelry might be worth.

This second link is a good read also regarding what the person pays and what the mark up of jewelry is actually.

Very high end jewelry will have a good resale market price.
Rings, bling, average everyday jewelry is just what the market will pay for scrap/melt.
If you're able to get 80-90% of the melt pinch yourself and smile it was ok.

The only way you'll be able to obtain what you want is to have it appraised then go off of that price.

You get it appraised at a jewelry store. Cost of that is now has to be considered, though you truly know what the insurance replacement value is now.
Now go try to sell that piece. Here are your options.

Your final payout depends heavily on where you sell the item: Appraised at $2500.00
  • Direct to Consumer (eBay, Private Sale): $750 – $1,250 (30% to 50%). You get the highest price but must handle the work and risk yourself.
  • Jewelry Store (Buyback/Estate): $500 – $750 (20% to 30%). Stores must leave room for their own profit margin when they resell it.
  • Pawn Shop: $250 – $500 (10% to 20%). These businesses offer the lowest payouts because they prioritize speed and immediate liquidity over the item's artistic value.
  • Scrap (Melt Value): $250 – $600. If the design isn't desirable, a buyer may only pay for the raw gold and gemstone weight.
