I was out digging today and got a signal hitting in the nineties I was thinking this is just a big piece of junk. But I decided to dig it anyway. I knew it was a buttplate when I pulled it from the dirt but I thought it was civil war period. I put some digger marks on it unfortunately, I hate doing that. It wasn't until later when I sent pictures to a friend who ID'd it for me. A rev war Brownbess Buttplate I had no idea it was that old if anything I was thinking after the civil war, it seems like I learn something new everytime I go digging. Happy hunting.

Your butt plate is early (most likely 18th century), but its from an early fowler, not a Brown Bess, still a nice find though.

I agree with fullstock, it is a fowler buttplate. A military musket would not have the decorative engraving on it.

Looks like you're on a good site. Doesn't matter if fowler or brown bess, it's a great find.

Thanks for sharing that information. I know nearly nothing about early gun parts. I will look into fowler guns.

Very nice find, though it looks like the plough got to it first.

Just looking at the different types of Fowler guns that are shown on different sites, a learning experience for sure.

Sometimes it's hard not to hit a find when they're longer in size as this one, either way it totally pi**es me off when I do it. I keep reminding myself dig wide-dig deep until it happens again down the road.

I've adopted a motto with regard to accidently gouging a target which has eased the pain to a certain degree.....Ready for it? "If ya don't hit it, ya won't get it" LOL

Nice butt plate. Love the designs on it.

Now, here's something I don't understand. Why wouldn't this be a "banner" find?

Not rare enough? Not pretty enough? Not made of gold? :dontknow:

Excellent save! It pays to uncover "junk" once in a while, ain't it. LOL

very cool find, maybe there's more of the gun waiting to be found nearby

Very Cool! Hey, your photo made me realize an unusual curved piece I found recently is probably a butt plate too. Have to take a closer look at it.
