Came upon these at auction last summer. A little out of my normal collecting arena, but thought they were an interesting article from an incredible era.

Interesting..
How does one establish provenance on socks?

Because they smelled like George Washington's feet.

I understand how difficult to validate the original wearer would be, but authenticating that they are at least period correct is not to tough. They have at least passed that test in the eyes of one (and I use the term cautiously here) expert.

There was so much authentic Civil War and Rev War period stuff at the auction these came from that I don't doubt their authenticity, but, I also realize that I cannot prove their provenance either. Even so, all things considered, I am very happy being the current owner of a fine pair of very old linen socks that at least come in a fantastic frame and have a good story to go with them.
