I'm pretty sure I found a musket ball from the American Revolutionary War.

It was found in an area where American troops were known to have camped.

I'd appreciate any comments from those experienced in this area.. I've never
found a musket ball before. It measures at 1/2" diameter. Thanks for any
and all help! MickTwin

Mick its definitely a roundball you have there. The 'knot' sticking out from it is the sprew where the melted lead was poured into the mold. It is rather impossible to tell whether it was used for something such as hunting or during the Rev. War unless you found some other items in the same area that would contribute to its provenance such as buttons, buckles, other bullets, coins, etc. Finds such as these would help in determining if it was indeed a musketball used during the Revolutionary War or not...at that caliber, could be civil war era as well.

Good find and congrats on your first roundball.

Exact diameter would help narrow down the caliber. There's a few size calibers around 1/2": 44 Caliber= .456, 54 caliber= .525, 58 Caliber=.577.

If it is truly 1/2" it is too small to be a musket ball, the muskets in use at the time would have been .69 to .75 caliber. Not to say it couldn't be from the Revolutionary war, could have been a soldier with a rifle as well.

I have found 3 musket balls about 1/2in diameter near a Rev War site in Ny. It could be the smaller bullet of the "Buck and Ball" that the American's loaded their muskets with. British did not use this because they thought it was dishonorable to use a bullet that went in any direction other than where it was aimed. But it was ok to kill unarmed people at homesteads that they thought were aiding the American's. We just wanted to hit and kill as many British as we could.

Looks unfired and has great patina!
