my wife dug this today, is it a butt plate? any idea what from?

Sure 'nuff looks like one. Late flint or percussion (1800 to the Civil War). Early ones are usually wider and with less of a "point" to the heel. That one wouldn't be no fun to shoot in a larger bore so it was also likely what folks call a "squirrel rifle" now.
