:hello:

Went to a charity dig in Lincolnshire to a well known Roman area, it was a long way to go for just two fields but it was for a good cause. Over night thunderstorms had left the field like a quagmire and the going was really tough on my right knee, second signal and I had my first Roman Silver of the season a nice portrait of Valerian 1st, also a first for me.:headbang:

The coin is a Roman washed or dipped Silver coin known as a Antoninianus, you can clearly see the silver plating coming of on the reverse, but the obverse has some nice detail. Managed a few other bits, Roman steel yard weight and a knackered hammered. This field turned out to be the best of the two, but we had to be off for 2 o'clock because the farmer was spraying it, but some one managed a Gold Stater of it, so a good little short dig, for a good cause.

You did well too! Very nice Antonian! :icon_thumleft:

Great detail on that little coin.
Which amazes me considering what they had to work with back then. I'm pretty sure there were no reducing machines.
Nice find, congrats on first roman silver of the year.

:occasion14: For a Rally, what ever the cause, it was a result.

Very nice silver! Congrats!

Not really a rally, more a private charity dig there were only 50 guys. He has over 20,000 acres in Lincolnshire far to much for him to ever do, so he is thinking of a long weekend dig next year on a bank holiday, not to far for you, I will give you the heads up if it comes off.8-)

Hi Rick :hello: The Romans were true masters at making coins from all materials, and even better at counterfeiting them to.

OK, I see, sounds good.

Hammered thinking about getting back into the game, maybe he will be ready next year?

Nice detail on the Roman, well done for the amount time out swinging.

Great detail on that one! The silver wash must have protected it from ground action as well.

Sleaford Rob, not to far for you
