Today i went for 1 1/2 hours back to the field where i found the Wulf Head Pendant on Sat. Still criss crossing the rather big field to locate the area where pottery, tiles and metal is in the ground. I seems to be the hot spot where the pendant and the coins from sunday were found, but further away were signals too. i manged 1.5 Denarii and got the front door key. :headbang: Lead and nails too, so i'm sure to have the right spot.

The broken Denarius is not identified, the other is Vespasian 69-70, Rome mint
Vespasian RIC 19
AR denarius
Rome mint, 69-70 AD
RIC 19 (C), BMCRE 7, RSC 84.
Obv - IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG; Head of Vespasian, lauerate, r.
Rev - COS ITER FORT RED; Fortuna, draped, standing l.,setting r. hand on prow and holding cornucopiae in l. hand.
VF+

A reverse type that wishes for a safe return of the new emperor Vespasian back to Rome after the end of the Civil war. Fortuna's hand resting on a prow is quite appropriate.

Update: Looks like the broken coin is an Antonianus the successor of the Denarius. My best guess is Philip I around 250 AD.

We have keys like this one dated 1-2th century. :dontknow: If medieval it must been a random loss, but i stay roman at the moment. Not sure about the pottery shard. Very thin for roman, but it has typical colour. Do you have a medieval match for the key?
The antonianus could be a Probus too. No letters readable....sorry.
Rain had washed the snow away sunday evening and today it became colder. I could feel during the hunt that the soil freezes. Hopefully i get some more days to detect there till the field will be planted in feb.

Great coin.

But they had no front door key in the Roman period (that was what latches & slaves were for). These keys were for 'safe' boxes.

Still a great example, of which I have a couple/given away 1....

That's not actually correct, although all Roman door locks could only be opened from one side, they did consist of a pin tumbler lock and key

You're getting it tuned in Lu. Now you just have to find the treasure chest, you've already got the key!

Thanks Hispan! Rain washed the snow away and now it's freezing....soil is hard as concrete. I had to stop hunting there. :coffee2:
I hope to detect in spain someday. Spanish silver is on the wishlist too!

You have some very nice finds here, well done. I just moved to Heilbronn Germany this past September from the states and I love having the opportunity to detect in an area that goes back to the Stone Age! I wish that it wasn’t so cold now after having such nice warn weather in Fall. I have been able to find a few roman pieces like strap ends, lots of lead, and a few bronze rings that look like they were used to hold leather straps together but so far no coins. Now I am settling in for the winter and doing my research. Most of the places that I have been to have been hunted out and hopefully the farmers will plough some good finds towards the surface for me! Looking forward to seeing what next year brings.HHGreg

You live in a nice area! Do your homework and show us some cool finds. You can expect from celtic over roman and medieval up to the newer stuff there. If there are places to hunt you are able to locate a spot where stuff is left too! It takes time and patience.... :occasion14:

From Cru'Dad:

I am sure the broken Antoninianus is a Sears 9934 RIC V Pt I 005 type. I believe I can see VALER on Obv and DEO V, plus temple pillar parts etc, on reverse for

AD 258 – 260 Billon Anton VALER[IANVS PF AVG] Radiate head right. Rev: DEO V[OLKANO] Tetrastyle temple containing Vulcan standing left holding hammer and tongs, sometimes with Anvil at feet.

Special Thanks to Crudad! :notworthy: He is surely killer in identifying roman coins!!!
