I'm thinking it's from the later 1940s early 1950s ladies belt buckle? A gold plate on base metal piece. No marks makes things a bit harder to identify. You see nothing like a very small mark under the corrosion?

Thank you Tamrock. I can't see any markings with the eye. I had refrained from additional cleaning as I felt I might be removing some of the plate. Perhaps I will try a bit more gentle cleaning and also take a look with a microscope.
