I’ve started a new project. A Smith & Wesson 38. I just finished carving the grips. Oak leaves and fish scales on factory grips.

I’ve already finished engraving the cylinder.

This project will last me into summer. I don’t get in a hurry anymore. Just something to keep me busy.

These are the first fish scales I’ve carved on a gun. It’s more of a European thing than American. Lots of negative feedback from American gun owners when it comes to carving on stocks. I carved a hammer handle with scales first to experiment. After I finished I realized how good they are for providing a good grip. Way better than checkering.

I think it looks pretty good. Have you ever tried to duplicate leatherwork tooling in wood? My daughter is pretty good at leather tooling. I can envision that being pretty western looking if done correctly.

I haven’t done anything lately. When the summer heat drives me inside, that’s when I’ll start back up.
