SFFD did use the "Helmet Shield" shirt badge around the turn of the century, circa 1900, even during the time of the 1906 Great San Francisco earthquake. I have owned one from that period and it looked much like your awesome find. I believe the badges were made by J.C. Irvine and yours probably had a machine pin with a "C" catch on it. Truly a museum-worthy piece. Cheers, Sub 8-)

I'm still researching. Coming up empty though. I can't find any that look like it.
 

Super congrats on that find, that is one of the coolest. I would be very interested in hearing what history you gather on it.
