This is one of the coolest things that I have ever dug! It came from a demo site where I found a 1898 Barber dime and a 1900 IHP a couple of weeks ago.

SFFD did use the "Helmet Shield" shirt badge around the turn of the century, circa 1900, even during the time of the 1906 Great San Francisco earthquake. I have owned one from that period and it looked much like your awesome find. I believe the badges were made by J.C. Irvine and yours probably had a machine pin with a "C" catch on it. I'm still researching. Coming up empty though. I can't find any that look like it.
