Hi all,
I just got back from a short trip to Sanibel Island in Florida. I had a small window of opportunity to go MD'ing for about 2 hours or so at night and took it. It was the first time hunting in a dozen years or so at least. My metal detector is a Vantage AD-14 prototype I picked up at Kellyco back in the late 80's or early 90's some time IIRC. They had built and tested the device before they were released and had this prototype to get rid of, according to my salesman at the time. I have yet to see another one so I am guessing they didn't last too long on the market.
Anyhow, on to the hunt. it was a overcast night so there wasn't too much light, but I had a head flashlight on so I could do hands-free operation and still have light. MD in the right arm, scoop in the left hand, and I was ready to go. I started right by my hotel beach access (Holiday Inn), which puts out lounge chairs during the day and drags them back off at night. My first hit was on the sandy path out to the beach, and it was a modern nickel. On the main patch of sand in front of the hotel I dug up a dozen or so bottle caps, some pull tabs, and some cigarette and snack foil waste. I started walking down the beach a bit and found a pair of earrings (fake, but nice), and some dog tags for someone who is a "killerbee", and 7 other modern coins.
I tried the surf some and discovered that it wasn't performing too well, I dug a lot of false positives and gave up after 10 minutes or so. By that time, the sand fleas made a mini-snack out of my ankles and it was around or after midnight so I called it quits. The next 3 days was going to be with the family on the beach, and I have little ones so I wanted to get some good rest so I could be bright eyed and bushy tailed for them

. I need something budget wise that I can dual-purpose for both land and sea/beach hunt, but primarily sea/beach. I favor the easy digging that sand has to offer
