Glass negatives saved from the landfill. Some interesting content that may help identify jewelry etc. Ran across this by accident while researching a notary public stamp machine I picked up for $5.

One thing I noticed, not only did these people dress in style but also some incredibly beautiful women.

Great post and i'm glad these didn't end up in the landfill, it would have been such a waste of history in my opinion. I looked at almost every photo and figured i'd have a little fun with a few of them, hope you don't mind.

Glad I found this post. The images are still there.

The quality is pretty good for images from the 1800's so I played around with one of them. (Didn't do the eyes though)

This young woman evidently died not long after the photo (she died at 21 years of age). Her name was Gretchen Arens.



Tried to colorize, then did a bit of cleanup (scratch and dust removal) and then some "frequency separation". It's not a finished piece, but I am doing it on breaks at work.

It is our sad duty to report the death of Miss Gretchen Arens at Chicago
on April 1. The deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Arens of
our burg and was born 21 years ago. Being the fourth child and first
daughter, she was the pet of the family. Receiving an excellent home
training, her character was as nearly perfect as anyone’s can be, and
her departure, just in the prime of life is indeed a heavy loss to the
family. Deceased leaves, besides parents, three brothers and two sisters
to mourn for her death. Mr. Wm. Greverus delivered the funeral sermon.

After a bit of experimenting and learning:



Look closely at the detail of the lace on her left arm (right side of photo). Learned a valuable lesson that makes this level of detail a couple of minutes, not an hour or more.
