Today was a day to remember for a long time, decided to take a days holiday from work due to the weather being so good for the time of year, We hit a new field and from the off they came to the surface I won't bore you with details the fist Roman Silver came right of the top as the picture shows, waiting for Crusader to ID it. My detecting buddy then went one better a full Vespasian again Crusader better than me on good ID, I then got a Hammered Half Penny of Edward1 1272-1307. In the afternoon my detecting buddy got the find of the day a Saxon Penny of Harold11 who only rained during 1066 and was killed at the battle of Hastings by William of Normandy( William The Conqueror) I have included other finds of the day in the pictures, it's turning out to be a good year.TK :o

First the easy whole one. Sears 2285 Vespasian 1 Jul AD 69 to 24 Jun AD 79. Coin Rome AD70. Obverse: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG
Reverse: COS ITER TR POT showing PAX seated left holding Olive Branch and Caduceus. RIC 10 RSC 94h VF £65 EF £185.

The Fragment one can only be one of 4 obverses. (1) IMP CAES VESP F DOMITIAN AVG PM (29 letters); (2) IMP CAES DOMITIANVS AVG PM (22); both Domitian,
(3) IMP CAES VESP AVG PM (16) Vespasian or (4) IMP CAES MAV REL ANTONINVS AVG PM (27) Marcus Aurelius. As the number of letters showing on just over 50% of the coin come to 11 then I calculate that circa 11 letters are missing at the most. The face structure showing also would fit Domitian whose G in AVG appears as a C near his neck which ties in with this fragment. With obverse (2) there is a reverse that reads TRP COS VII DES VIII PP (the last 9 letters are visible on this coin) and is a picture of a wreath on a curule chair (we have showing a chair leg, part of seat, wreath and - just - a chair back). Therefore, I am almost certain this is a Domitian as Augustus AD81-96 Sears 2747 RIC 18 RSC 564 minted Rome AD81 VF £75 EF £210.

Thanks to Dad on his time on this whilst I popped out.

We won't be able to sleep now, you barsteward
