I managed 2 short trips close to home and 3 trips to the scout camp this week.

At the old high school I spent 5 hours swingin the CZ21, 17 coins with a face value of $1.41, 2 screw in cleats, a Timex watch face, a chunk of melted lead (it could be camp lead from the civil war camp, but it could be just a chunk of construction lead, no way to tell for sure), a cheapy cross, a blank brass pendant, 2 .32 caliber starter blanks and a 1945 wheatie. Unfortunately no oldies from the civil war camp this time.

I spent 3 hours at the park where I found the 2 mercury dimes last week and found 43 coins with a face value of $2.81, a cheapy heart pendant, a plated ring, a NO CASH VALUE token and a 1920 wheatie.

I spent three 6 hour days at the scout camp completing the detection of a small campsite. Digging most of the mid tones and all of the high tones, determined to clean the place up good. Camp has been canceled for the season so I have all summer to cover the sites. I just wish it wasn’t over 80 miles round trip to do the camp.

The first day I found 94 camp tent pegs, 153 coins with a face value of $12.45, a stainless knife and spoon, a dead pair of pliers, a dead pocket knife, a dissecting probe with a brass handle, some fishing sinkers, a game piece soda tab, a grenade style log splitter, a file, a tooth from a backhoe bucket and an old hammer head.

The hammer is an odd one. Possibly from the old farm. At first I thought it might be a cobblers hammer, but I am not sure about that. My father would know, he collected antique tools, but he is no longer here to consult. If anyone recognizes the type of hammer, please speak up. I’ll have to get it cleanup up so it can be saved.

The second day I found 67 camp tent pegs, 190 coins with a face value of $16.15, an old dead scout knife, 2 good knives, the usual fishing sinkers, an enamel on brass pendant, a 2000 British 5 pence, a scout pin, 2 mess kit wing nuts, and 2 rope tensioners.

I did find a half of a Roosevelt dime, but it’s not the kind of half dime we all hope to find. It’s just a cut up dime that is worthless.

The third day I found 81 camp tent pegs, 130 coins with a face value of $9.86, an all metal tomahawk made for throwing, a buck master knife, fishing sinkers, a live 22 round, a clevis pin (used to keep a pack on a frame), a fishing lure, a neckerchief slide, a rope tensioner, an old scout backpack shovel, and a 1953D wheatie.

Some of the tent pegs are what i call Big and little Berthas. They are older and have registration numbers stamped in them during manufacturing. I believe someone who worked at a steel mill made them for camp when it first opened in 1980. The scout shovel is a style sold in the 1960s. I remember them from when I was a scout. The tomahawk looks like it was made for scouts to throw. It is all metal with a pipe handle. Scout love to throw these things, but they are really not very good. They throw too hard, it hits the target hard and goes flying into the weeds and it is really hard on a good tomahawk. It is painted yellow so it will show up when they miss the target, or it bounces off. It may be one that belongs to camp, I will check with the director and return it if it does.

I feel like I am in a scout camp rut. I would love to find some silver, gold and older goodies, but I want to take advantage of the opportunity to clean up camp while it is closed for the season. I do have to spend some time at home with the honey do list since my wife just retired and has lots of time to think up more things for me to do. Camp is good for my overall clad and money count and I do find a wide variety of interesting things. I used to fish a lot, so I guess that is why I enjoy finding all the lead sinkers.

So the old man is still out there swinging with social distancing fresh air and sunshine, and finding lots of pegs for camp (my scout good deed for the days) piles of clad and sinkers and enough other stuff to keep it interesting. Thanks for looking stay safe and may your coil lead you to good things.

You should find an old site somewhere close. With all the skill you've acquired at the Boy Scout Camp, I think you would do really well at a good permission. You've helped out the camp for a long time. Ask some of the camp directors to point you to a good permission. Gary
