Hit two construction sites today in San Francisco. The first one looked like it should have produced some fantastic finds. First time I saw it I had visions of barbers and seated coins being dug up! They scraped off a large area adjacent to a 100 year old church. What a disappointment! All I managed to dig was about 25 clad era coins from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. I covered the area meticulously, gave it 3 hours worth of coverage. Oh well..So off to another site.

So I drove across town to another construction area at one of the old recreation centers / parks. It was much better area for finding the older coins. It also had a large scraped off area. Scored 11 wheat pennies, a religious medal, and two silver dimes. A 1959-P Rosie, and a 1945-S Mercury. So it was a interesting day. Did OK.

Wow, seems like you should have done better, judging from those pix. But ..... ya never know. If the old-town-urban scrapes are in areas of high rises, they can be all scr*wed up, from past deep excavations and fills. But your pix seems to make it look like areas which were not occupied by high-rises and such. Oh well, keep stumbling on to stuff like that, and eventually you'll hit some of the good ones. Did you read the article in W&E magazine about the turf scraped off in Garfield park several years ago, to make ready for artificial turf?

Yea, I know. I've hit dozens of similar places over the years and scored some really nice stuff. Doesn't make sense for an area like this. Perhaps fill was brought in 20 years ago for another renovation?

Yes, I know about Garfield Square. I had my eye on that place for over a year and missed it. I did get several silvers off of it about a year before the scrape. Awesome story in W&T.

At the first church site I dug up a oval shaped piece of metal. I thought it was a piece of junk. I just cleaned it off with water and this is what is says in caps: REV. RAGAEESO S-J OREG, it's sterling silver! It is about 2 inches long. Any ideas?

You were a little too late on the Rec Center. I've been hitting that place with a couple of fellow detectorists several times over the past 4-5 weeks. We pulled some silvers and a bunch of wheats out of there but nothing spectacular or super old. I've talked with the general contractor doing the work, and after the rains earlier in June the workers were finding silver coins just laying on the ground. I can't believe we left two dimes there!!

As to your first site: I looked at it and passed on it because the ground they tore up had buildings on most of it until not too long ago, maybe 30 years or so. But looking at your pictures I can see that the scrape is more extensive than I first thought. Hmmmm....

Happy Hunting!
