SECRET OF THE MASON'S MEDALLION ??? HELP !

I hunted the grounds of an old masonic lodge for about an hour and a half and found absolutely nothing but pull tabs and memorial cents. Just as I decided to call it quits, I ran my coil past an area close to the front steps, which I had supposedly already gone over, and I got a signal. Finally, after digging down 8" in beautiful pristine rich soil, I saw this thing at the bottom of the hole. I have exhausted all of my resources to find out what it is and what it means. The local masonic/Shriner's temple tell me that they cannot reveal what it means or it's purpose because it's the secret of the mason's. :icon_scratch: Anybody got any ideas ?

Re: SECRET OF THE MASON'S MEDALLION ??? HELP !

I will p.m. you with my list of Masonic items and give you the opportunity to purchase them before I sell them at a flea market. Then you may choose to keep them or donate them to a lodge. The bibles I keep in my own collection.

oh you can sell your items at a flea market if you wish to after all --they are your items *

my father was a mason --past master of his lodge * -- as such i was around masonic items and know quite a bit about the masons -- I myself however am not a mason ( thus i do not have or "own" masonic things )-- my father masonic items are currently housed with my step mother * dads wife at the time of his passing who is a member of the female branch of the masons for members wives and daughters --the eastern star *---- dad was also a past patron of the local eastern star and she is a past matron-- when she dies-- their "masonic" items will be turned over to the local lodge

My Grandfather was a master mason,
I have some of his things including some very special things.
They are all engraved with his initials.

I was told by the lodge he belonged to that I should keep them to remember him.
They have much to remember him by. These things would go into storage or be distributed throughout the members who knew him as remembrances, so I just kept them.

Ivan,
I have been contacted many times by collectors of this kind of artifact.
There is big money to be made in this area. I haven't sold anything but ...there may come a day.

as i said --they are your items to deal with --each person makes their own choices * -- i just know my thoughts on the subject -- I'm not telling others what they "must" or "must not do" -- just my point of view on the issue is all. --- so mote it be.

Re: SECRET OF THE MASON'S MEDALLION ??? HELP !

I agree with the others that it is the bottom half of a Tyler's Jewel. Keep it. They are common and still made. The one you have appears older, but I can say with almost certainty that the Lodge that you found it near has a collection that includes ones of its age that are in pristine condition. You found it while pursuing your hobby, and is most likely more important to you than to the Lodge.

While it is common for a family to donate a loved ones masonic items to their lodge, I believe it is more appropriate for families to keep the memorabilia. While some of you may have no interest in the Brotherhood, your heirs may, and will be thankful that you held onto them, if they choose to follow the Path. Consider this before selling off your Grandfathers, etc items.

That being said I collect Masonic Items. The majority I buy from yard sales, auctions, Ebay etc. For that reason I am glad much of it is put into boxes and stored away......:) Buying, Selling, Trading and Collecting Masonic Items is NOT frowned upon by my Lodge, but this may differ state to state.

I'd lean toward saying it's a tyler's jewel, but from a Lodge or Royal and Select Masters in the York Rite, not a blue lodge. How's that for ya?
