Hi all,

I went out at 5:00PM to the tree farm and stayed till 6:30PM and ran out of daylight. I found a couple clads and a nice big colonial button. I found what would have been the prettiest tombac I have ever found. This baby is sweet and clean and 1/2 broken >:( >:( >:( It looks like the plow got to it before I did. It was a nice hunt and for the second time in a row I was hunting amongst 12 turkeys grazing in the field beside me. How cool is that? I'll take my camera next time ;D

Nice buttons. Is that the same field where you found the King George? Buttons are under rated. They dont seem to get the same response as coins but I still like finding them. Great hunt.

Way to go on some really cool finds!

Hi Evolution,

Yes this the same field that the the George II came from. It's a funny little spot in the field. It is on one corner of this small field where I have pulled 5 coppers in two years along with a handful of buttons and one beautiful silver 1660-1720 shoe buckle. It's a fun little place to hunt. You just never know what his plow will turn up next. Thanks for looking.

Very nice, any Gobblers in the turkeys? or all hens

Ed,
Congrats on the buttons.
Just curious. What size (cm) is that large colonial button?
Thanks,
MM

Hi guys,

First of all the turkeys were all HENS bummer.... I think they like me because I did not have my gun with me. They must know the difference between a gun and an Explorer II ;)

As for the button, it sounded off as copper and is 33mm.

Speaking buttons, this one that I posted from last week from the same field is 35mm. It has the serrated design around the edges. I really like it. The next one, found far in the woods at this site 9" deep has a center webbed design and flanked with small flowers around the edges and is 33mm. And my favorite button has to be this bronze wheat stalk design found on the edge of a cellar hole about 4 years ago in my town. It is in fantastic condition and is 32mm.

My question is:
What is the minimum size for a button to be in the category of "dandy"???

Geez Ed, those are big buttons! I found a 25cm this week and thought THAT was big.
Funny you mentioned "dandy". When Crusader posted his reply to my button he said it was nice, but "not a dandy". I thought he meant my button was a piece of cr-ap. I was thinking to myself, it may not be a Roman coin, but it is not that bad. ;D Now I am seeing "dandy" is meant to be a certain type (age?) of button.
WHAT IS A DANDY?
God, I love this site. I learn something new everyday. ;)
Thanks,
MM

Hi MM,

The 'dandy' was a large button worn on the coat sleeves and along the breast of mens jackets in the 1700's. I have a book that depicts a man dressed in a coat adorned with dandy buttons. They look pretty wild :o I will try and photograph it and post it for you to see. I'm not sure what the minimum size is for a button to be considered a dandy button. I'm glad you liked the buttons I posted.

Ed-

I don't know if there's a minimum size requirement for a button to be called a "dandy." I usually refer to buttons as "dandy buttons" if they are flat buttons that are closer in size to (or bigger than) a U.S. Half Dollar--more decorative than functional.

Regards,

Buckleboy

Your "Dandy" button looks nice. I have only found two in my career. They are always a tease though because they look like large coppa coins when you first dig them out. hahaha

The first Pennsylvania Infantry Battalion 1700's had large Pewter and sometimes brass buttons on there Sash.
Rusty and I found what we think might be a pewter infantry button yesterday but we have to have it clean by electrolysis as it is very corroded.

Thanks for the info on the dandy buttons. Rusty's mate, you need to post a picture of that button you found!
