Well it look as though we are about to lose access to some more of those "public lands".

• Senator Reid fails mining industry
Senate Bill 22, the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, passed the Senate on January 15, 2009, and Senator Harry Reid (D-Nevada) is solely to blame.

Reid sold out the mining industry and sided with environmental organizations like the Sierra Club and The Nature Conservancy. S. 22, if passed by the House of Representatives, will place millions of additional acres off-limits to mining and other public lands uses. National Parks will be expanded, new parks and Heritage Areas will be created, new Wild and Scenic rivers will be established and wilderness studies will begin in areas that are currently open to public land users. Worse yet, the bill would establish a 26-million-acre National Landscape Conservation System. It states, “...in order to conserve, protect, and restore nationally significant landscapes that have outstanding cultural, ecological, and scientific values for the benefit of current and future generations, there is established in the Bureau of Land Management the National Landscape Conservation System.”

Public land that is "locked" up as wilderness is still public land. Public land is a grant from the United States of America and can NOT be taken away from the public by a few enviromentalists and a senator standing alone. Wilderness or no wilderness, it is still public land.

I was trained well by our military to walk through the wilderness and leave no evidence. I WILL enjoy my country and Senator Reid can NOT stop three hundred million Americans from doing the same.

I'm all for public land, which we seem to have a short supply of here in Texas. Its the wording that makes me wary; protect, cultural, ecological, conserve. That usually means its closed to all but a few special interest groups.

you know there a lot of opinions on all this but i agree, whos owns it? we do

Ill stop detecting when the following happens.........

ski trails quit beeing cut and maintained through these areas
mountaing biking and the errosion and trail system that suports it is eradicated
snowmobiling , the trailing and foresty that ensues to support it ( i am an avid snowmobiler )
camping , walking and any other activity that requires any modifaction whatsoever to the landscape
Hunting and any other sort of activity that grants access to the land for one specific reason or another....that scaters to only one group or another

the idea that that you can single out one group because of a 2" hole that is dug that dissapears after the first rain and ban them while trails are beeing cut through for the bikers is absurd

heres a justification for you and ill use this as an example, ok so ive dug a few holes here in michigan. some legit maybe some not but ill also tell you that our own forest service and dnr has done more damage than all of us metal detectorists out there could possibly ever do
i know of at least three case where supposed "CONTROLLED BURNS" of forest got out of hand and burned thousands of acres homes etc.
but im not supposed to cherry pick an old quarter??
