Jake, I don't have a clue what that thing is... I'll do some research for you and get back to ya. The only thing I can offer right now is that it looks like a buckle of some type, and the trendy name misspellings came into vogue about the fifties. Shur-Lok as opposed to Sure-Lock.

Thanks for the help :) It was found in an area that was used from the 1700's through the 1800's into the 60's or so.

Thats ok you gave it a try! Apparently theres alot of different shur lok companies...heres a few exceprts from some sites:

"Shur-Lok Corporation was founded in Los Angeles, California in 1951 by Frederick W. Roh? and remains a private concern today."

"The principals at Shur-Lok have been in the welding, assembly and value-added business since 1964. "

But, i think its older than 1964. maybe even older than 1951.

Jake, can you resend the second and third pics a bit larger? Also, does it appear that the bend in the buckle part is supposed to be there?

Well the only thing I'm ALMOST Sure is the Top part is a DEADBOLT.

& the Bottom appears to be a handle.

How they Worked together is the Mystery to me.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Why I say ALMOST, is Because it Can Also Pass as a BUCKLE of some type.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Maby the Buckle for the Paymasters Satchel? ;) :D

Ok Jake, I'm going to go out on a limb here and call it a harness buckle. The little ball goes through a keyhole slot in the leather and pins the two straps of leather together. The buckle part is meant to lie flat on the tail of the leather and is just for looks. This would be the reason for the 90 degree bend in the buckle near the ball as no other reason makes sense. Any other reason would only make for a weak bend in the brass buckle. The buckle was just for looks and to keep the load and the tail straps together. My best educated guess!
