Silver cuff bracelet from Mexico

I got this today from a thrift shop for a total of $19.00. Its marked with a word that's beginning with QUAD? MEXICO 900. Doing a little research one source says Mexican silver marked 900 is typically made from around 1900 to the 1920s. I'm not so sure it's that old, but I did get a good price on the silver value if anything.

Hi Tamrock. I think you did pretty good.

I have a feeling that that what looks like a ‘Q’ is a malformed ‘G’ and it reads ‘GUAD’. Artisanal Mexican marks are often badly stamped and that would be a common abbreviation for the Mexican town and silver-centre of Guadalajara, with the mark frequently seen as ‘GUAD.MEX’ or ‘GUAD_MEX’ like those below:



Since your piece is already marked ‘Mexico’ in full, the other three initials might well be for the maker but, if so, I don’t recognise them. Looks like ‘JAH’ possibly.

Nevertheless, I would be pretty sure this is from the first half of the 20th Century, before the Mexican government began promoting the reintroduction of eagle marks to identify manufacturers (from 1948 onwards). Prior to that, Mexican silver was just marked ‘Mexico’, or with a town name, or both, plus some indication of silver quality, and makers identified themselves (or not) with whatever they chose.

Thanks Red-Coat. I thought it was maybe from the 1940s or about. It is rather interesting and being a handmade piece makes it unique imo. It looks almost Native American.
