DAY 1
I went to the oldest park in the area. It has been hunted for over 40 years by a lot of people. Most just wander around and thankfully leave stuff behind for me when I grid search. I spent 5 hours swingin the CZ21 and found 84 coins with a face value of $4.63, a silver dime, a wheatie, a Canadian nickel, another foreign coin, an old porcelain house fuse, a cheapie ring, an aluminum tie for an ice bag, aluminum wire bits, aluminum bottle caps, can slaw, an old hoe, foil and 24 tabs.
The silver dime is a 1948 D Rosie. The wheatie is a 1936 in great shape. Wheaties come out of the ground pretty rough most of the time. The acid soil is hard on them.
The foreign coin is one I haven’t seen before. The front has a starburst and some pictorial lettering. The one on the far right at about the 3:00 position (circle with a line vertically through it) is one I recognize from my stamp collecting days. It is on Chinese stamps and coins. On the back is a picture of some ancient Chinese money so the coin is most likely Chinese. I can’t find one like it on line.
DAY 2
We went camping with our daughter and her family. I got up early and detected half of the swimming area the first morning. There is a decent sized swimming area and it takes 2 mornings to cover it all. I did the water and a quick check of the beach.
I spent 4 hours swinigin the ATPro and it was a lot quieter than in the past. I did have some luck, but the targets were few and frequently grouped together. You scoop a coin and there are a couple others close by, what most people call a spill.
All together I found 24 coins with a face value of $2.15, 2 rings, 6 earrings, sinkers, a toy car, foil and 12 tabs. You know the current type of tab is know as a “stay on tab” and the older ones are “pull off tabs”. So why don’t people leaved the silly stay on tabs on the can! Why pull them off and leave them around for the poor people with metal detectors to have to dig piles of them out of the ground and sand?
The 2 rings are nice. The rose ring is unfortunately plated, you can see the copper shining through. It is pretty and would make a nice ring in silver. The middle ring is badly bent but is silver. The other ring doesn’t look as nice, but it is silver also so that makes it better.
DAY 3
My second morning camping I went back to finish the swimming area and my granddaughter joined me. I spent another 4 hours swingin the ATPro in the water and found 24 coins with a face value of $1.68, 3 and a half tabs, some jewelry, part of a disposable cigarette lighter, sinkers, a cord end, selfie stick retainers, miscellaneous metal, a toy monster made of metal, a toy car and foil.
The ring on the left is silver and looks hand made. The work is crude and the stone is plastic or resin of some kind I believe. The gold bow earring is silver as well. The bead is silver number 3 and is so tiny it almost went through the holes in my plastic sifter.
My granddaughter only detected for the last 2 hours, young people don’t like getting up at dawn, and was swingin my other ATPro mostly on the beach and some shallow water. She found some coins, an electronic product tag, some bottle caps, a sinker, a watch, 2 tabs and some foil. Her best find was the watch. It is a Timex child sized band watch that was still running. She found some goodies and had fun, that’s all that counts.
NON DETECTOR FINDS
One of our grocery stores has a coinstar machine and I sent some of my coins through it and got a gift card. A lot of the coins were rejected which surprised me. A different grocery store I rarely use has a different type machine. It takes 5% but you get a gift card for that store. I have a friend who shops there and said he would buy the gift cards from me so I decided to give it a try.
When I got there I couldn’t get the machine to turn on so I got some help. I wasn’t pushing the screen hard enough it turns out (the toughest touch screen I have ever encountered). The lady saw something down in the machine so she got the key and opened the machine. I notice a few coins and other things in the corner that had been thrown up and out of the hopper so I reached down and scooped them up. She saw me do it and said nothing so I put them in my pocket. I used the machine and it took all the coins including ones rejected by the coinstar so I was happy. When I went to get my gift card she gave me cash instead. (Cash transactions take 11.5%, gift cards take 5%). I told her it was supposed be a gift card and she said I could have the gift card if I didn’t want the cash. I took the cash of course and it was with the 5% reduction so I made out fine.
When I got to my truck I looked in my pocket and found a few coins a small earring and 2 rings. Somebody took grandad’s jar of coins and just dumped it in the machine without looking first and the rings were mixed in with the coins. The rings are gold. One is 10k with a tigers eye gem and weighs 8.9 grams or .29 troy ounces. The other is 14k with a large Garnett and 2 small diamonds and weighs 5.2 grams or .17 troy ounces. At today’s gold price I could sell them to my local dealer for $637 and change. A rather luck day for me.
When you put coins in this machine you can see down into the machine at the spinning wheel and some of the coins fly up toward the top. If you dump in too many at a time they fly up and out and end up under the lid. That is how the rings and the coins I found ended up in the corner of the machine under the lid.
I also pulled a handful of coins out of a different coinstar reject slot.
