hI, SILVER FOX!
YOUR RECENT POST ON DIGGING HOLES AND RETRIEVEL METHODS GOT ALOT OF POSTS
SOME NEGATIVE, FROM PEOPLE WHO ARE DOING A GOOD JOB ALREADY.

BUT I THINK IT WAS A GREAT POST , BECAUSE THERE ARE ALOT OF US WHO NEED TO BE HUMBLE AND ACCEPT WE COULD DO ALOT BETTER DIGGING HOLES WITH LITTLE EXTRA EFFORT!
MYSELF INCLUDED.

EVERYONE WHO IS DIGGING HOLES RESPECTFULLY AND CARFULLY DOESNT NEED TO RESPOND TO THIS
POST! YOUR DOING A GREAT JOB!

IT IS FOR PEOPLE LIKE MYSELF WHO THINK 8 YEARS EXPERIENCE. AND DIEHARD, NEED TO PUT THE SHOVLE
DOWN AND BUY A DIGGING TOOL AND A DIRT CLOTH OR FRISBIE
AND TAKE 40 SECONDS EXTRA TO DIG A PROPER HOLE .
SPECIFICALLY MYSELF.

SCOTT

Thanks, DFX-SCOTT, I appreciate it. As you may have noticed, there were some less-than-friendly replies who took me to task saying in effect that I was a bit harsh. From my point of view as a detectorist who started in 1979 and detected almost everyday for over 20 years, I don't think I was harsh at all. There are, of course, detectorists who are considerate in their retrieval methods but, frankly, It seems that the opposites are the majority. I didn't have a problem learning to pinpoint, probe and make a hole just wide enough to retrieve the thousands of coins, etc., that I found. Yes, of course, I did have to widen the hole a little once in a while to retrieve a side-sitting can, or a large rock. But my on-the-mark pinpointing made making large holes unnecessary. The easiest area to use a probe in is with dry dirt. Once you lift the attached plug, a probe finds the item in the loose, dry dirt. When the dirt under the plug is moist probing takes a little more effort and dirt will sometimes clump to the probe and that's when a piece of cloth or even part of a newspaper from a nearby trashcan comes in handy where you can drop the dirt and when you retrieve the item you can drop the dirt back in the holes along with rocks, etc.

But what I complained about are the detectorists that don't seem to know how to pinpoint and as soon as they get signal they just whip out their digging tool and open the earth and whatever follows as shown in that video I mentioned. Go to YouTube and look at the videos of detectorists and you'll see that quite a few of them just open up the earth and then they're shown holding a cent or some other small item. The hole they retrieved it from is usually 5"-6" or way more in width. I just can't do that. But some feel there's nothing wrong with that. In public parks it's ridiculous. In private property it's between them and the property owner, if present.

It offers a certain amount of pride to stand up and try to find the area you just retrieved a coin from and you can't find it. But when you look back and you see the disturbed area clearly, the effort wasn't good enough.
It's up to the person and, fortunately, it's a choice.

I never read the post... but anyone who advocates a clean dig is doing good.

I don't have my years of experience yet, but one thing that I do pay really close attention to is my method of retrival, due to the fact that I really enjoy having an open invitation to good sites. The method I use involves a short shovel with a slightly larger blade, I cut one side of the hole, then just pry up the dirt. I usually just pull the dirt out in my hands, and crumble it back into the hole. It leaves very little mess, and I have yet to have a problem with the "dead sod" look, I think that is because of the larger plugs. After it rains, you can't even tell I've been there. I do agree tho' be careful with other peoples property. HH all.

There are LOTS of great folks here and I know you'll do lottsa reading and learning :) Ask questions... and absorb all that you can. Hundreds of folks here, like the Fox, and myself, have been detecting since the 70s... and hundreds more since the 60s. You're gonna love it too...

Scott, like anything in life that has to be learned, practice makes perfect. You can practice the piano 'til your hands bleed but in the end you will become a great pianist even if it's only for personal enjoyment. There's a satisfaction in learning something properly. The person who just makes a stab at learning a piano eventually calls him/herself a jazz pianist. :D

There's no law that says you have to be good at anything. In metal detecting, there's a certain satisfaction in being able to retrieve a coin or whatever because you learned to do it differently than "accepted" norms. Yeah, if you wanted to and didn't give a damn you could just make an unsightly hole and get the target and move on. And I only criticize sloppy detectorists in public parks because the public sees you and you can impress them or turn them off depending on what your retrieval area looks like when you're finished.

Great musicians are admired. So are considerate detectorists. I speak from experience.

I have some good friends who are excellent jazz pianists--and in no way inferior to those who are concert performers.

Primarily, there are melodic jazz pianists such as Eddie Costa (and vibraphonist), Ahmad Jamal, Russ Freeman, Pete Jolly, heck even Dave Brubeck, and then you have the weirdos exemplified by Keith Jarrett who use the instrument with vengeance and do not actually produce music. Bill Evans is in there too.

"Excellent" is in the ear of the beholder.

I don't need your list of great (and not so great) jazz musicians. Are you trying to seem intelligent? More importantly, are you trying to say something derogatory about my ear?

It appears the Silver Fox is also quite the piano aficionado.

I too... am a fan of ragtime piano pounding.

Although not as schooled in the art as University Professor Buckleboy with his two huge degrees in music, I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night.

Viva La Schroeder!
