Silver Quarters

Does anybody have any idea as to why quarters are so hard to get in silver. It seems that quarters are probably the most used
coinage outside of the penny and yet there is tons of wheaties and no silver quarters. It just seems that there should be more
of them in circulation than half dollars yet CRH yields few if any from the boxes.

Just the last couple of weeks I have received (2) 1965 quarters, (3) 1966 quarters and several 1967 - 1969 quarters in change, yet the ever elusive 1964 and prior are just not found. Dimes continue to show silver which absolutely makes no sense to me.

People have been hoarding the silver quarters for a long time as they are easily recognised as silver compared to the dime. Hence more dimes less quarters. Heck I was saving silver quarters since the 70's long before I got into detecting and Coin Roll Hunting.

You answered your own question. Think about it. If you find a silver quarter, you will take it. If you find a silver half, you will take it. So, why are there so many halves left? Exactly as you said - because they are not used (Circulated) much. So they are still there. As for quarters, even non CRH people use them on a day to day basis, see silver, and keep it. So the silver in quarters got culled a lot faster than halves. Due to the fact it IS used more often.

I think the reason is because of their high use. A silver quarter is very easy to spot in change and thus were removed from circulation very early on. Unless you look closely, you can easily miss a silver dime. Just my opinion.

There aren't many silver quarters because of vending machine and laundromat operators. Just about everyone who empties out vending machines or washers/dryers for the quarters either knows the sound that silver makes when hitting the bag or does a quick rim search and takes out any silver looking rims. Then, there are people who look for the new state quarters in their pocket change, they see a 1943 quarter and think, wow, this is old I'm going to save it, they might not even realize it is silver but they see an old coin. You have to realize that most of the time any quarter boxes you get will have passed hands several times before being sent back to the bank. Halves produce more than quarters because they rarely circulate, meaning every time you pick up a box there might have only been a few people who have looked through them, however, most people who get halves are CRHers today and so halves are starting to dry up. Dimes produce decently because there hasn't been a new design for over 50 years, they are small and hard to date or rim search when compared to halves or quarters and few people handle them in bulk, that is there aren't many people who spend day after day looking at dimes except for cashiers and most of them are young and don't even know that the US ever made silver coins! (or think that they still are silver)

Agree with Generic_Lad 100%.

Most of the silver quarters I encounter are at coin shows!

I traded some 40% Kennedy's and surplus silver dimes on Sunday for 24 uncirculated silver quarters.

One of the main reasons I read is the HUGE, HUGE amount of State Quarters out there making your chances to find silver CRH .slim.

I looked up the State Quarter mintages 1999-2008 HUGE!!!!!!!!!!! 34,794,200,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And that is Clad only!

They are easier to dig than they are to find in rolls, I've found 2 this year in rolls, and have dug seven. ffd

That is probably a much better way to find Silver Quarters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
