Silver uMax vs Deleon

Hey all, I am going to be getting one of these detectors and I was curious if anyone has a preference between the two. I realize the Deleon is a TID machine which is cool but on the other hand I have never read a negative review of the Silver. Actually some thing I've read point to the Silver being one of the deepest Tesoro's for coins. I would just like to hear any opinions on the two. Thanks -Jay

I had the xlt e series and thought about getting away from the screen machines bought a vaquero then went to a cibola. I am dead serious on the cibola. It's a coin killer and one hell of a deep relic hound. Ask terry Solomon. These machines are beast and its sad how underrated they are. Most believe that they are cheap machines because they don't have a high price tag but I would never go back. I'm a tesoro man now

Cibola is for sure a top rated relic and deep coin machine.It's the silly paint jobs that throws people off.I coin hunt and also relic hunt.But for coin hunting the Golden umax is amazing!.With the notch disc and the tones i can pick nickel's and rings out of trash with notch setting.Then the tone will tell me if i have silver or copper and clad.The Golden umax is the most under rated detector of all.But i tell you the best things are found out last.The Golden is a coinshooters dream plus i am believing i might take it relic hunting! :-Q

Terry Solomon is probably the best bet insofar as comparisons among the Tesoro lineup....hopefully he'll chime in with his
views.

I had the Cibola a few years ago and I wasn't impressed at all...but I think it was due to me turning my disc up too high to be honest. I remember I would crank it up and I imagine that had some negative effect on depth. Now the only thing I worry about is the fixed ground balance. I emailed Tesoro to see if they had any info on the amount of mineralization in different areas of the US.

In regards to Terry, He is so Pro-Tesoro I don't think he could think of anything but positives.

If you look at the map you can see Gladstone does have slight mineralization. You are located about an hour and half north of me. I am just south of Menominee, MI. Stay off the beaches on the lakeshore- there is nothing there!

I watched the videos of the Golden in action and thought it sounded enough like the Coinstrike to be, well, second nature. If you haven't watched a Golden umax video, I'd suggest watching some '53Silvers vids about it.

It is strictly personal, but I know that I could not tolerate another beep-dig Tesoro. I had an Eldorado that was a sweet little detector, but I need something with more audio interest.

Well with the new snow my season is officially over. I got about 7 hours on my Silver uMax before the snow. Bear in mind I don't have a ton of experience on it but can't say anything bad about it. Here are some of my observations and experiences with it. In all metal mode it finds deep metal (12"). I have done good on coins in the 2-6" range. I am sure it will get a little deeper on coins, but the areas I hunted may not have any or I didn't get my detector over them. The discrimination works excellent. In several coin holes I had nails and metal that were discriminated out. I was really impressed. It loves bottle caps and these are hard to discriminate out without missing coins. When I first got it I was disappointed because it would only find targets 4" deep in my test garden and barely pickup a few at 6". I think the issue there was my test garden was one week old and the soil was freshly dug. I quit worrying about that and just went detecting and had better results in undisturbed soil. I typically run in all metal mode and switch to discriminate when I get a target. Sometimes I also run with discriminate just above iron. It pinpoints very easy and I pinpoint in both disc. mode and all metal. The last time I had it out I set the Disc. just above pull tabs and cherry picked the coins. The coins were distinctive loud hits and I was occasionally fooled by a bottle cap of clump of aluminum can. I am just about an hour and half south of you and my soil here has little to no mineralization so I ran the sensitivity at 10+ and had no chattering. The only time I had a problem was in a front yard with a power line going overhead to the house. I started getting chatter and had to turn down the sensitivity a fair amount. Overall I like the detector but can see I need more time learning it's language. I love how simple it is to operate, a few adjustments, turn on and go. I don't know how deep the Deleon goes, but I would like that a little better because it gives you a numerical target readout. Between that and the sound I think you can better judge what is below the detector. My kids will be using the Silver and I am thinking about getting a MXT Pro or a Xtera 705.

I think I can get a lot more depth out the Silver by removing the ground balance pot and adding a 10 turn pot to the face of it. The ground balance is factory set on a board mounted single turn pot. You can adjust this to get better ground balance but have to be really careful because the single turn trimmer pots are VERY sensitive. With the 100k single turn pot and about 300 degrees of rotation you would get about 333 ohms per degree of adjustment so the slightest movement of the pot will have large consequences. I don't see how Tesoro can fine tune these really well. They must just have window for their setting. This means your detector will pass if it is in the window but not necessarily be peaked. A ten turn pot will give you about 28 ohms per degree of adjustment. This would be much easier to make small tweaks and peak your detectors performance.

Well i have a tesoro silver umax and love it a matter of fact i grab it over my explorer when im hitting parks and ball fields when i get tired of digging pull tabs i set disc to zinc penny and dig dimes pennies and quarters and don't lose much depth

I have owned a Deleon when i was hunting parks, moved up to a Cortes and started doing nothing but relic hunting with coins mixed in the old sites. I have also used my hunting buddies silver U Max relic hunting. All are impressive machines but i have to tell you, that Cibola is a monster! It is deep yet when you disc out iron it is so quiet! Doesnt peep unless it's brass and above. My Cortes is super deep and has all the bells and whistles (that most of I dont use) but it chatters so much on the small iron no matter how much i disc out the iron. If your looking at a silver U i would strongly consider a Cibola for a few bucks more mostly due to the fact that it comes with a bigger coil. that said a silver u max is a great little machine that you shouldn't be fooled about because of the price tag! Just my 2 cents. HH Shane
