SIX CIVIL WAR ARTILLERY SHELLS IN ONE DAY!!!

My digging buddy HomeGuardDan and I had a great day on the river yesterday. It started out shaky because all of the rivers were high and muddy from the recent rains. Ended up having to dodge some lightening bolts and a few water snakes, but we had some luck nonetheless! Pictured are me and Dan plus the six Civil War artillery shells that we found. Five out of the six appear to be Confederate. They include 3-12 pounders, a Schenkle, a Read-Parrott, and a plain old Read. What fun it is to dig the big iron!

Here is the pile o' shells, mostly Confederate. Included are three 12 pounders, a Schenkl, a Read and a Read-Parrott.


Looks like I'm going to be kept busy treating all of this iron we keep finding. Not that I'm complaining

I was just reading a webpage on how to disarm and clean these, with before and after pictures (Artillery Restoration). I could only dream of finding something awesome. like this up here in Indiana (not going to happen!).

Coil, we used the Garrett AT Golds, great water machines, but most top line water machines would have found these.

If these are relatively inert, how do you know which ones are dangerous?
Even if I saw one of those, I dont think I would touch it.

Civil War era shells were loaded with black powder that rapidly degrades. Five out of six of these shells had paper fuses that obviously rot and allow water to enter. The sixth had no fuse. There is absolutely no danger in just handling them. However, shells of a later time period are very different, and can be very dangerous to handle. All of our shells are immediately rendered completely inert via remotely controlled methods using recommended procedures. Then they are just a 10 pound hunk of hollow iron. All of my shells are rendered inert by the time the photos are posted.

Congrats to both you guys - you're killing it and it still isn't even summer yet. Can't wait to see what else you can recover. Did you guys have to float those babies downstream in the kayaks to your vehicle? Hopefully you didn't have to tote them too far, but I'm sure you didn't mind. Good luck next time!
