Hey gang. It’s that time of the year when cold weather keeps our digging team from the chigger infested woods. We open our jars and research our finds. Thus I bring forth a skeleton key. Brass. Knurled band the top portion. The number 2 stamped on the teeth. It was found in an area that was frequented by both Civil War and War of 1812. We have found mostly CW camp items....

Can anyone give an approximate date and/or usage? I am assuming since we detected in a picket post/small campsite that I can rule out a key for a house/building.

Help please:)

It's not a skeleton key (they are designed to open many different locks). That style is called a "barrel key" and looks more like a steamer trunk key or padlock key.

It is certainly a heavy-duty key, no matter what it is for! Congratulations! Good luck finding out what it is for! Thanks for posting!

As heavy and short the shaft is I would say it's to a chest or strong box.
It also looks like it was lost when fairly new due to the lack of ware.
Vary cool Key
