Who can best identify the age on this buckle and possible function do to the metals color and size? And One of my best coins from 1800 found even though it's not too old and a penny still made my day. What's the best way to clean a penny when it creates this kind of crud on the back?

You could give the coin a light wash with warm soapy water or let it sit in distilled water for awhile then give it a short olive oil soak and take it out every once in awhile for a gentle wipe to see if any more dirt is coming off. Some people don't like the oil method but for a none rare coin it couldn't hurt. Sometimes the bad green turns slimy when your washing it a lot of it should come off. If it was a brittle coin you could probably leave it just the way it is.

Sometimes you get a nice green patina but others will have thick bad green (verdigris) that is eating the coin.
