I think this is a flat button. If it is, its my first flat button. My hunt was a very short one today, only about 1 hour. I found an old shotgun shell, I believe this is from 1920-1929. I found a clasp of some kind, and some junk. If anyone can give some insight on my finds i would be very thankful.

Just curious, but how can you pinpoint the shotgun shell to that short time span?

Does that item resemble the top of a valve missing the stem part? Like in an internal combustion engine? I have found about 5 of those things in my spot I have been hunting for awhile now. I can't decide if they are buttons or not. Too small to be a car valve and I believe them to be too small for an engine that existed back a long time ago. I say along time ago because all my finds from the area date 1800's to very early 1900's.

I did some research and found this on another forum.

"Winchester New Rival (1897-1901, 1920-1929) Olive green shells in 10, 12, 14, 16 and 20 gauges). Had 1901 on them between 1901-1919. After 1920 the 1901 was dropped and paper was blue. 10, 12,16 and 20 ga: 1920-1929, 14 ga: 1920-1917. Yellow paper Yellow Rival shells with New Rival Headstamp made from 1899-1904. 10, 12, 14, 16 and 20 ga."

I don't think it looks like a valve. I think it's much to thin to seal anything. Here's a pic of the side profile.

Button. Many of the colonial period buttons had raised metal in the back to which the shank was attached. From the pictures, that look like what you have.

hard to tell from the out of focus/non macro pictures, might be a broken rivet:dontknow:

This does not look like a button at all to me. What is the larger brass thing in the third photo you posted at the top of the thread? That piece look interesting!

do a search and see if there is a button club in your area. I brought a handful of buttons to one meeting and they were all too willing to help ID them. good luck

with good pictures this would be a 3 second task on Tnet. (no button club needed)

It's some sort of clasp I think.

Yeah, not a button. At least not like one I've ever seen.
