In Februari this year i have dug over my garden at a depth of 25 cm and in March it rained allot. I was doing some gardenwork in May and suddenly spotted an little rusty object on top of the soil that i had turned over in February. I must have rained out of the soil. It is sollid metal and atracts a magnet strongly. it measures about 2 cm. What could it be?

Appears round in shape and appears solid iron. I suspect that it is either an old very oxidized ball bearing or (not knowing the history of your area) may be shot from an artillery round.

thanks for your response, but we can rule out ball bearing because this is what a ball bearing is made of:
AI-overzicht

Ball bearings are primarily made from high-carbon chromium steel (often called chrome steel) for durability, hardness, and cost-effectiveness. Other common materials include corrosion-resistant 440-grade stainless steel, silicon nitride (ceramic), and plastics. Hybrid bearings combine steel rings with ceramic balls for high-speed performance.

my object is of malleable iron and when i made it wett it rusted pretty quickly, no militairy history in this area.

probably devalued it by grinding it. oeps
Not that big of a deal. Canister shot isn’t worth much because of the sheer number of balls that are shot out. People get confused between grape shot, case shot and canister shot. Grape shot are 6 medium sized steel balls that were wrapped in cloth and held together with rope. They literally looked like grapes. Case shot was basically a hollowed out smooth bore cannon ball that was filled with steel balls. Whats unique about case shot is instead of the limited range of both grape and canister. It would launch the cannon ball far above the approaching infranty and it would explode right above them, peppering them with shrapnel. Canister was literally a can filled with a lot of steel balls. Sometimes, if they were limited in steel balls. They would put whatever they can find inside, nails, scrap metal etc. nasty stuff.

What do you mean with taconite?
search yields : Taconite is a type of iron-bearing sedimentary rock that contains about 30% to 35% iron and is primarily composed of magnetite, hematite, and chert. It is mainly mined in the Mesabi Range of Minnesota and processed into pellets for steel production.

Maybe a piece of bar or chain shot, but could also be from a fence.

The picture with the ground off spot looks like a very rusted broken head of a carriage bolt. Hard to tell the shape in three dimension from the photo though.

Too round. His Thing is a perfect ball. Unless the bolt was a complete ball, idk.
Like I said, hard to tell From the photos. Some look round. That one seemed flattened. Maybe just the angle.

Before I retired 16 years ago I was into gold prospecting and the guys at work used to make a joke aboy it they would spray paint rocks with gold colored paint and lay them in the plants along the sidewaik for me and then they wou;ld point it out to me! :):):)
