SMALL METAL THINGAMAJIG

Found this in a field next to my house. Does not look like it opens, has a small slot on edge.

My guess is that it came from an old clock. the thingamajig that swings to and fro.

I was thinking the same thing. Probably an old sewing tape measure, because it looks like maybe cloth inside. Maybe similar to this one-

YES I opened it up and saw the last 4" of tape on it. It was a three ft tape. I opened it to see if there were any markins becides numbers on it, But there were none
