snorkling

ok fellas this maybe be an idiotic question.... but what is the deepest that you can snorkle? Do they make really long snorkle tubes? I wanna try to hunt in deeper than waist deep water,,, but dont wanna invest in expensive diving equipment... any ideas??

The question has been asked many times.

There is a reason that snorkel manufacturers have not already made a longer snorkel. It is because they would not work. To prove this to yourself, take you a three foot piece of large diameter garden hose to a pool and have someone hold one end about 8 inches or so out of the water while you submerge and breath out of the other end. Your chest is compressed by the pressure of the depth too much to take in air even at that shallow depth which would be about 2 feet. You may be able to suck in a couple of breaths.

This is why air from a scuba tank is delivered under pressure.

If you want to go as cheap as you can. You may look into the electrical powered Hookah Rig. It runs off a 12 volt marine rechargeable battery. It is still going to cost you around 1000 bucks for the initial outlay but you have no tanks to refill, etc.

Hate to break this news to you but there is no cheap way to stay submerged and still have the time to find and recover a target unless you get really good at holding your breath. I use a snorkle on occaission just to get a look at what I am scooping in waist or chest deep water. It comes in handy when you have one of those small targets that keeps falling through the scoop. Sometimes you can see them when they fall out.

Take care and be carefull trying to go cheap on air or breathing devices. That may end up being a bad choice.

Good advice DaChief. I used to snorkel along a swim area just to look for dropped coins and dollar bills. I added about a foot to the snorkel not for the deeper depth but to keep so many waves from breaking over the top.
