I mostly creek hunt and a lot of my finds are so stained people think they are rocks in the pictures. They are usually pretty ugly when they dry out and turn solid black. I got something called Cleaning Vinegar and Iā€™m soaking some that were so stained I hadnā€™t even put them in frames. Now they arenā€™t done yet and I will repost them when competed. All were a solid black just yesterday. Check out the colors coming fourth.

Interesting, looking forward to how they turn out. I have never tried any vinegar (I only have a few I've found in creeks; most are too sandy my way). I have soaked some of my Florida finds in mineral oil and they turned out very colorful and some translucent. Alot of my S. GA finds turn caramel color and translucent. I know mineral oil would absolutely do nothing for anything creek stained.

I dropped a few broken ones in last night I wouldnā€™t recommend it for any grainy material like Rhyolite just chert and quartz. Heading to work in a bit, thanks for the interest

Well Iā€™ve soaked a few the best one was the first picture I posted. Still have to get some more pictures letting them dry out first. I do find black chert so some I thought might be a different color underneath weā€™re just black. But the tan and grey ones came out pretty good

I'd be happy with that!
Iā€™m tempted to soak another that was a beautiful green and tan when I found it but dried black and tan but I donā€™t know if it would go back to the green. Sure donā€™t want to ruin the color

Well I just had to soak a few more šŸ˜ƒ
Now just think all of these were solid black. What a surprise to see a quartz and some quartzite and then the 2 tone in hand. But then again some were actually black.

Vinegar is an acid, so be careful. You can dilute it, too.
Yea Iā€™m not putting my best in it mostly broken ones and definitely not grainy types like Rhyolite. Itā€™s just interesting to see the materials. All of these I thought were black chert due to the stain
