soap and water..?

Numismaticly speaking what happens to the value of a coin if "I" wash it in soap and water? I take care not to mash any grit into the coin. I also only clean of surface grime not any actual patina...thoughts. please..

Stick to q-tip, perferrebly no water if it is an exceptionally rare coin. all experts will agree that you should leave the coin untouched; if the coin is of insignificant value, and only valuable for your own collection you could use soap and water to make it more aesthetically appealing but bear in mind it will negatively impact the value.

His does one determine that a circulated coin was ever washed??

Experts use microscope's and spectroscopy and compare the rate of oxidation on the coin, in the case of copper-clad coins; soap leaves a unique residue, and it will hinder the value.
