Solid box

Had a very solid box today:

7 - 40%
1 - 90% Ken
1 - Walker (1938) New oldest coin found CRH!

Box also contained 11 proofs, and 1 1986 commemorative coin. Are these worth anything? Unfortunately I don't think the proofs are silver proofs (I'd be able to tell from the edge, right?).

Nice box. You would indeed be able to tell from the rim if the proof was silver.

FYI - They starting making 90% silver proof halves in 1992. There are no silver proof halves, other than a 40% bicentennial, from 1971-1991.

Thanks - these are clad proofs then, unfortunately. Any value / reason to hold onto them in your opinion?

I've kept some of the better condition ones I've found. Two really good ones from each year would be perfect. I probably have around 50 or so, and that is plenty. I have no desire to tie up very much money in impaired proofs.

Back when silver was in the $40's, I tried to trade my impaired proofs for 40%ers at 55 cents each and paying spot for the silver. No takers. I see them sell occasionally on ebay, but its very much a hit-or-miss type deal.

Is it a '38 D? Check for the D on the reverse = key date = $$$ Nice box!

Look at the edge. If it is copper it is clad. The walking Liberty is 90% Silver. The Ellis Island can be either silver or clad

Just a regular 1938. I wish it was a 1938 D - looked them up they're worth quite a bit huh!? Even in this coins condition, had it been a 38 D it probably would have been worth a pretty penny.

Thanks! It's a thrill when you start pulling out silvers left and right! Of the 7 or 8 boxes I've done this year, 2 have been like that, 2 were skunks, 2 had a couple 40s, and 2 had a single coin (walker). All across the board!

Congrats on the nice finds. The easiest way to tell if your coins are silver or not is to weight them. A clad half weighs 11.3 grams, a 40% silver half weighs 11.5 grams while a 90% silver half weighs 12.5 grams. The San Francisco mint also produced "business strike" half dollars which are the same "S" mint mark as the "cameo" proof halves. Also since 2002 all halves are "NIFC" (Not Intended For Circulation) along with 1987. You can also tell by the sound when dropping the coins together in your hands. The silver coins have a different ring to them. It takes a while to learn the difference but when you learn to distinguish the difference, it's easy to find the silver coins. Even thought the 38 wasn't a "D", it's still a nice find.
